PRESS RELEASE
Alliance for Change (AFC) Statement on International Human Rights Day

Today, as we observe International Human Rights Day, the Alliance for Change (AFC) takes this opportunity to reflect on the fundamental principles of justice, equality, and dignity for all. While Guyana has made strides in various areas, the AFC remains deeply concerned about significant human rights issues that continue to affect our citizens.

One of the most pressing challenges is the alarming rise in gender-based violence. Despite legal frameworks designed to protect women and vulnerable groups, enforcement remains inconsistent. Cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse frequently go unprosecuted, with survivors often facing barriers to justice. Reports of bribery and inadequate police training further undermine the credibility of the system. The AFC emphasizes the urgent need for robust reforms to ensure women, girls, and all survivors of violence receive the protection and justice they deserve.

The AFC also highlights the marginalization of Indigenous communities. Indigenous peoples in Guyana, particularly those in the hinterland regions, face serious threats to their rights and livelihoods due to unchecked mining activities and land disputes. These communities often lack access to essential services, such as healthcare and education, exacerbating the socio-economic inequalities they endure.

Another area of concern is the growing erosion of democratic freedoms and governance transparency. Reports of corruption, misuse of public funds, and discrimination persist, undermining public trust in institutions. Civil society organizations, whose role is critical in holding the government accountable, frequently encounter uncooperative responses when addressing alleged abuses. Compounding this is the government’s failure to establish the Human Rights Commission as mandated by the Constitution. The absence of this vital body deprives citizens of an essential mechanism to address human rights grievances and hold those in power accountable.

On this International Human Rights Day, the AFC calls for meaningful action to address these critical challenges:

  • Ending gender-based violence through stricter enforcement of laws, improved support for survivors, and greater accountability within law enforcement agencies.
  • Protecting Indigenous rights by ensuring their participation in decision-making processes that affect their lands and communities.
  • Strengthening governance and transparency to uphold democracy and ensure equal protection under the law for all citizens.
  • Establishing the Human Rights Commission to fulfill the government’s constitutional obligation and provide a platform for justice and accountability.

The AFC remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a Guyana where human rights are not just spoken about but actively defended and upheld. Let this day serve as a call to action for policymakers, civil society, and all stakeholders to work together toward a more just and equitable future for every Guyanese.
END.
