For immediate release to all media houses.

The Alliance For Change (AFC) extends cordial greetings to all media workers on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day.

This year’s theme “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights” recognizes that freedom of expression is fundamental to enjoying and protecting all other human rights and draws attention to the critical role the media can play in ensuring human rights of all citizens are guaranteed.

The AFC notes the concerns expressed by the Guyana Press Association and the Caribbean Media Workers Association in relation to the safety of Guyanese journalists and reiterates its commitment to freedom of the press and respect of the role the “fourth estate” plays in building a democratic society. The Alliance for Change holds firmly that media workers must be allowed to carry out their duties responsibly without fear of intimidation and/or bullying.

In this context the leadership of the AFC categorically states that, it will not tolerate any of its members engaging in any act that may be construed as an abuse or intimidation of any journalist. Any such act would be met with outright condemnation.

The AFC stands in solidarity with journalists working to promote democracy and a better society and urges all journalists to uphold the principles of good journalism.

The Alliance For Change (AFC) extends best wishes to all pupils writing the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) examinations over the next two days. Our hearts and prayers are with you all. Remember to stay calm and do the very best you can.

The AFC also takes this opportunity to say thank you to the many teachers who would have worked tirelessly to bring the pupils to this point and to the parents for their sacrifices and commitment to giving their children the best they can.

Once again, best wishes to pupils sitting the NGSA exams. May success be yours.
