PRESS RELEASE – INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2023
The Alliance For Change (AFC) salutes all women and girls in Guyana as the world celebrates another International Women’s Day.
We recognise Guyanese women’s indomitable spirit and invaluable contributions over the last five decades across all spheres of life and express gratitude to them for their contribution, both large and small, to national development.
Over the years, many of our women have stepped up into the position of leadership in their communities, regions and at the national level. We should do everything to promote this expansion.
Today is also a global call to action to ensure that the expansion and upholding of women’s rights are achieved – especially reproductive rights, the fight toward ending domestic violence, abuse, and the inequalities still facing many Guyanese women.
This year’s theme, “DigitAll – Innovation and technology for Gender Equality“, recognises the role technology can play in meeting the development needs of women and girls as they make advances in their spheres wherever they are in our global community.
The AFC’s longstanding commitment to this agenda of ensuring that more Guyanese women embrace the use of technology in their personal lives to enhance training, access to information for health and entrepreneurship for economic development was demonstrated in January 2016 when the former Ministry of Public Telecommunications was established to push the digital agenda aggressively. During that period, internet penetration rates in Guyana increased as free internet was provided to schools, in government agencies, and many communities gained access through ICT hubs and centres. We are happy that this thrust continues.
Today, the Alliance For Change recognises the positive strides made and encourages all our women and girls to join this transformational process by participating in current innovation approaches.
We call on our private and public sector stakeholders to move forward and commit to providing more women with increased opportunities to work from home and online employment to maintain their families.
The AFC recognises the strength, resilience and courage of our women.
Happy International Women’s Day to all.
