March 4, 2023.
Lionel Jaikarran, in 2016, was one of three persons who served as Alliance For Change (AFC) Councillors at City Hall, in the Municipality of Georgetown. Lionel, Carlyle Goring, and yours truly were honored that our party reposed that confidence in us.
We worked along party lines with Coalition colleagues and former Councillors Phillip Smith, Alfred Mentor, and Akeem Peters, among others. Lionel succeeded yours truly as Deputy Mayor and Akeem later succeeded him, with Alfred now holding the fort. We all wanted the same things for our
National Capital City Georgetown when local democracy was restored by the APNU+AFC Coalition after being suspended for over twenty years.
Lionel was a gentleman by nature. But could also be a street fighter and brawl politically on the issues he was passionate about. He was a constant guide for me and a sounding board during my tenure as Deputy Mayor. But the Lionel Jaikarran I got to know during that time was more than just a Councillor.
His passions infused others with all that he was involved in. He opened his home to us and we got to know his beautiful family, his beautiful wife, and his children whom he adored and guarded jealously. I admired the best of him as a father and husband.
He opened up the cricket club where he was serving as president to our small grouping and we were able to see another side of our friend and brother. He was also passionate about ophthalmology and all things eye care. There was little not to admire about him.
We will miss him, his bigheartedness, camaraderie, and clarity of thought in these turbulent times. I am happy to have had the privilege of knowing Lionel Jaikarran on his journey which came to an earthly end recently. On behalf of the Alliance For Change and my own personal behalf and that of my family our condolences, our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with his friends, family, and loved ones at this time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
