The above visit was made on Thursday Dec. 10 – Fri Dec11, 2009 as part of the AFC’s countrywide visit to reach children for the Christmas season. The team comprised David Patterson (MP), Latchmin Punalall (MP), Peter Ramsaroop (CEO), Sewnauth Punalall (Ex. Committee Member) and Shawn Henry.
The team arrived around 5:00 pm on Thu. Dec. 10 and we commenced at Campbelltown, an Amerindian settlement. Around 125 children and many parents gathered in the village’s benab where we met. Each child was given a toy and a paper bag of goodies. We interacted with Ivan Pio the village’s captain and left a quantity of clothing with his dear wife Marbel to distribute to the needy in their midst. We were also able to visit a few other villagers and key AFC people such as Mark Crawford and Ivan Wayne. Seventy five toys, clothing and goodies were left with Ivan Wayne who will distribute them at Maicobi another Amerindian settlement.
We had planned a walkabout but two obstacles hindered us. On our journey in we had a few hours delay at the bridge crossing the Demerara River in Linden. This is quite an aged bridge and it was under repairs at the time of our arrival. Secondly it started to rain heavily shortly after our visit in Campbelltown and it continued until the next morning when we departed. However we got around these hindrances by having in-house meetings.
During our previous visit to this location in Aug 2008 the women of Campbelltown requested Mrs. Latchmin Punalall to teach them to cook roti and curry. Despite the rain on Fri morning a few women showed up at the Amerindian rest house where they had a successful session. However we recognize the need to return to this location to continue this exercise and to teach the women how to sew. The women,s group up there has three sewing machines but lack the knowledge to operate them.
