The Alliance For Change on October 7th, treated the residents of the Berbice Dharam Shala to lunch. Through partnership with an overseas based family, the AFC treated almost thirty elderly people at the Home.
In a short address to the residents, AFC National Executive Committee member and member of the AFC Regional Management Committee in Region #5 Abel Seetaram said it was a privilege for the Party to share lunch with the residents. He noted that those who resided at the Home would have served their families, communities and country for many years and it is now time for them to be served.
Seetaram told the elderly residents that the AFC has been urging the government to spend more on the elderly so that they can be better able to take care of themselves. He point out that up to last year the AFC had proposed a raise in the Old Age Pension to $15,000.00 but that was not given. He said the AFC will continue to make representation for the elderly because they have contributed in various ways towards the development of Guyana and they must not be forgotten or forsaken.
Seetaram thanked the Administrator and Caregivers at the home for the love and care they show the residents. He urged them to go out and seek assistance from the business sector as there were many persons in the society who would be willing to contribute to the upkeep of the elderly.
In thanking the AFC and the overseas based Guyanese family, the Head Caretaker of the Dharam Shala said the Berbice Home hardy gets support. He appealed to the general public to come out and support the elderly. He said that many of the elderly who reside at the home worked for their children and relatives and now that they have become sickly and aged no one wants to take care of them. He said that they were all happy that the AFC and its partners pitched in and that he hopes to see more assistance in the future from the AFC and its partners.
The residents were treated to lunch and each of them received a token of appreciation for their past contributions towards the development of Guyana. A quantity of groceries for their kitchen was also handed over.
Seetaram was accompanied by Reyard Ward, Nigel Jacobs and others from the AFC. Members of the overseas based Guyanese family that provided financial contributions were Kalyan, Sankar, Indi, Nirvanie, Priya, Trisha, Michael, Danny, Shenese, Ariella and 87 year old Anjanie, all of New York.
