The Alliance For Change held its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Whim village, Corentyne, Berbice. The NEC is the highest decision making arm of the Party and has general responsibility for charting the way forward for the Party.
The Whim meeting saw the attendance of NEC members including the Party’s Leader Khemraj, Ramjattan, Chairman Nigel Hughes, Vice-Chairman Moses Nagamootoo and representatives from as far as Orealla, Bartica and Paramakatoi.
The NEC meeting saw the adoption of the policy document for the women For Change, the women’s arm of the AFC, reports from AFC Regional leaders and sectional leaders.
The highlight of the NEC meeting was the adoption of the Berbice Declaration which outlines the AFC plan for the development of Berbice.
Following the successful NEC meeting, the AFC held a public meeting at Whim. Not withstanding the rain, AFC leaders addressed matters of national concern including NICIL, the 2013 National Budget, and corruption. Issues specific to Berbice were also addressed. These include the sugar industry, drainage and irrigation, job creation, drug abuse, suicide and other social ills plaguing Berbice.
While in Whim, the AFC leaders took the opportunity to meet with religious leaders from the Christian, Hindu and Muslim communities and visited a Hindu Temple. The team also visited the Canje area where residents took to opportunity to highlight the myriad of problems they face, including overgrown drains and canals, corruption at the level of NDCs, discrimination and abuses coming from Regional officials, lack of programmes to address drug and alcohol abuse, domestic violence and unemployment. Elderly residents also complained that they were being deprived of their NIS benefits.
There was overwhelming support for the AFC and Berbicians were relieved that at least one parliamentary party has a specific plan to address the development of the area and its people. [END]
