At the recent monthly meeting of the RDC of Region Three held on January 2nd, 2013, the Chairman of the RDC Mr. Julius Faeber kept shouting at opposition councillors forcing a ‘walk-out’ by the Councillors.
It is clear that the RDC chairman is attempting to bully and frustrate the opposition councillors and prevent them from doing their job, which is to scrutinise the work of the RDC and prevent corruption at the Regional level.
At the meeting on 2nd January, the Regional Executive Officer reported that about 99.7% of the work for 2012 was completed.
As a Councillor, I questioned this report.
– Canal #2 Endeavour & The Commons Secondary School is still not finished. The stairs have no rails and it is dangerous for the children to use.
– Canal #1 and Canal #2: The mud roads were dug up about seven months ago and work stopped.
– The bridge between Canals #1 and #2 at Cameron Dam is defunct.
When I made these observations at the meeting, the Chairman shouted at me to, shut-up or I will be thrown out of the meeting. This dictatorial, disrespectful behaviour which is totally unbecoming of a public officer was not going to be tolerated. The opposition Councillors walked out of the meeting.
There are many problems and wastage of tax dollars taking place at Region Three
– At Kawall Primary School at tarmac was built for students to play volleyball and basketball. There was no prior discussion with the NDC. Few people in the area play these games so the court is left to go the dogs, and cows.
– A nursery school at De Willem, West Coast Demerara recently put in some new sash windows and in less that a month the cross frames started to fall off.
– At Tuschen new scheme a Primary School was built recently. Two sets of window panes have been changed because they keep falling out.
– Also at Tuschen new scheme, rape is on the increase. There is an Outpost in the area but due to it not being used cows have taken it over. Recently, two girls who were being attacked in their homes had to call the police at Parika.
– The Parika Multipurpose building is closed most of the time. It is only when registration for elections is being done that the building is in use.
– Millions of dollars were spent to develop a land fill site at Parika Back-dam at the Crown dam area. Not a pound of garbage was dumped there and bushes now cover the area. A road and culvert were also built to facilitate the dump site. Now the RDC is talking of developing a new dump site at Windsor Forest.
When I question the squandering of taxpayers money, I am met with abuses and threats by the Chairman of the RDC. In addition, the Works Programme for the Region is not shared with me so I can keep a close scrutiny on what is happening. In the few instances when Bill of Quantities are provided, the contractor’s name is left out or the cost is left out. However, I want to assure the people of Region Three that I will continue to raise these matters.
