The Alliance For Change lauds the decision of the Government to erect a monument in honour the 1823 Demerara Slave Rebellion. The AFC considers this a move in the right direction and an acknowledgment of the struggles of our African ancestors who ignited the torch of freedom which leaders like Dr. Cheddi Jagan, Forbes Burnham, Peter De Aguiar and others would later carry.
Having met with various interest groups who all support the erection of the monument, the AFC shares their view that the most appropriate site for such a monument is the Parade Ground. History shows that it was at Parade Ground that more than 100 slaves were beheaded.
The AFC therefore, having taken due consideration of the historical facts, urges the government to site the monument at Parade Ground where the blood of our brave ancestors was shed in the struggle for freedom. [END]
