Catherine Andrea Hughes (Cholmondeley) is a Media Specialists with extensive knowledge of the Caribbean media and advertising environment. She is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, having obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) degree in Mass Communications with a major in Television Production.
In 1986 she completed post graduate training and received a Diploma in Training and Development and one in Supervisory Management, from the Institute of Training and Development in Liverpool, England.
Cathy has worked in the Media in the Caribbean and internationally for over twenty years, first as a news reporter for the Caribbean News Agency and as a Television Producer with the Jamaica Information Service.
In 1987 she joined the BBC’s Radio Merseyside team as a freelance reporter and in 1989 she moved to Texas where she was responsible for the production of local news for insertion on CNN’s Headline News in College Station, Texas & Louisiana.
Cathy returned to Guyana in 1993 and is now runs her own company Videomega Productions – a state of the art digital television production facility and advertising agency. Her in-depth knowledge of the Guyana media landscape has made her Company a success in placing media, producing corporate brochures, radio and print advertisements and more. She is also Director of Ariantze Hotel Sidewalk Café and Jazz Club, a family run business.
Cathy Hughes is a vibrant motivational speaker and has presented several guest lectures for the University of Guyana, women’s and non governmental organizations. She has participated in several Women in Business conferences including the Global Forum for Women in Cairo, Egypt in 2006 and is an advocate for the positive use of the media in educating communities on national issues especially in the areas of health, education and tourism. She is the former President of the Tourism & Hospitality Association of Guyana, THAG, and is a member of the Caribbean Broadcasting Union and the Caribbean Media Corporation.
In 2005, Cathy joined a group of energetic Guyanese who were committed to forging a new political landscape in Guyana. A few months later they would form the “Alliance For Change”. Since its inception Cathy has been an active member and later serving on the Party’s Executive Council and Management Committee. She is fiercely committed to changing Guyana’s racially based politics, the eradication of corruption in government and the ending of Guyana’s state owned radio monopoly.
In January 2012 she entered Guyana’s parliament to serve as a Member of Parliament in the Tenth Parliament of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana representing the Alliance For Change.
