The AFC extends congratulations to the GTUC, its newly elected general President Mr. Norris Witter and other members in the team. We are pleased to note that over the four day period of the GTUC Conference there was evidence of a sharpened national perspective of the struggles being endured by the working class in Guyana. As a result, the deliberations opened new horizons and great promise for all stakeholders.
In the context of what has become a national struggle being waged by bauxite and sugar workers a historic challenge now confronts the GTUC and every working class oriented labour union in the country.
The AFC has placed on record its principled position on the plight of workers both in the bauxite and sugar industries and stand ready to continue to expose the injustices, corrupt practices, and mismanagement of this PPP government. We caution Guyanese against falling prey to the ‘handouts’ being doled out even as this government failed to create a vibrant economy with new jobs and real wealth for Guyanese workers.
No government should be allowed to trampled on or reverse the historic gains of the working class in this country. The tripartite approach to the resolution of workers’ issues should be honoured in both the letter and in spirit. We wish the newly elected president, Norris Witter and members of the GTUC success.
