In observing Thursday November 25 as International Day for the elimination of violence against Women, the Alliance For Change (AFC) urges communities to get involved in ridding our society of the scourge of violence against our women and girls in the same way the old adage advises – it takes a village to raise a child. It takes a village to curb domestic violence.
On this occasion we applaud women for the contributions they have made towards developing Guyana and a better way of life for our people. The AFC notes that in every town, community, village, work place and home would not have been the same without the contributions of women.
Therefore, on this day we remember those who were abused psychologically, physically, sexually or emotionally and salute their fortitude in overcoming their abuse. Most regrettably, we remember those who have lost their lives through violence while we salute those persons and organizations such as Help & Shelter, Red Thread and others that have been effective in their work to eliminate violence against women and girls.
Finally, we salute Guyanese women for their home executive skills displayed daily as domestic economists who manage their households with thrift in spite of the trying local economic hardships they confront.
