September is here again and the Alliance For Change Party joins all Guyana in saluting our Indigenous brothers and sisters countrywide, on this their Heritage Month.
A month to particularly recognize and exhibit their rich culture and valuable contribution made to Guyana’s development is well deserved. We acknowledge the relevant place our Indigenous Peoples command in our country’s history as well as future progress and support all initiatives to enhance their lives and livelihood.
While efforts are made by the Government of the day to address issues related to our hinterland brotherhood there is much, much more to be done. The AFC is concerned that in many instances the Indigenous community is used by the ruling party for political points instead of genuinely looking after their interest. Our Indigenous Peoples are worth more than that and must be given the dignity and respect due to them. Outboard motors, tractors, ATVs and small grants are but some of the ways the Government seeks to indicate their “so called” care for them. Wanting the community to believe that everything given to them is a gift or courtesy is shameless and unbecoming.
The truth is, like all other citizens of Guyana, our Indigenous Peoples are entitled to their share of the economic pie.
The most recent disrespect can be found in the Low Carbon Development Strategy, instituted by the Government. Communities and their representatives bewail the fact and even protested that the consultation process was flawed and that they know and understand very little of the Strategy. The Government on the other hand wants the world to believe that the LCDS is the best thing that can happen to the Indigenous Community. And so the AFC wants our Indigenous Peoples to know that the party empathizes with them and will spare no opportunity to represent their cause.
So our brothers and sisters be assured that you have the total support of the Alliance for Change and when given the chance we will work with you all for your as well as our Country’s development.
Our brothers and sisters this is your month, enjoy the various activities in your communities and elsewhere. Share your tradition, customs and culture with all Guyanese without fear. The AFC is looking forward in participating in all your activities as far as is possible. Happy Heritage Month to you all and may you prosper and excel in all your endeavours. God bless you all.
