AFC's Dominic Gaskin holds meeting with Moruca residents.

Purpose of visit

Response to an invitation by Region 1 representative for a member of the Management Committee to attend a meeting of AFC members concerned about some of the recent reports carried in the state media.

I attended a meeting held at the home of an AFC member. There were approximately 15 persons in attendance and the meeting lasted some 3 hours. I handed out copies of our last 5 press releases as well as fact sheets and DVD’s of AOM. I handed a hardcopy letter of invitation to our representative to attend our next NEC meeting in Georgetown.

Local issues

Dengue and Typhoid are rampant in the area and there are no testing facilities in the community. Residents must travel to Charity to get tested. In the meantime the local hospital is diagnosing these diseases based on symptoms and treating with Panadol. This seems to be working for some persons. This has been going on for about 6 months now. The mosquito situation is quite bad and there is no fogging.

The only newspaper available in the community is the Guyana Times. The only broadcast media available to them is NCN radio.

Government is restricting entry into the country of members of certain of international organizations. Also refusing extensions to visits by these persons. I could not get specifics of this complaint.

Government is constructing a mess hall for students on Amerindian land without proper permission.

Looking for assistance for needy children in the community – school books.

Conclusion

I believe that those present at the meeting are now satisfied that the reports they have been receiving from the State media are PPP propaganda and do not reflect the true situation within the AFC.
