AFC Condemns GCB ’s politicizing cricket in Guyana with its unprecedented endorsement of the PPPC – Dr. Vince Adams
I
n his recent speech at the Berbice Annual Awards ceremony, Mr. Bissoondyal Singh, the President of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) arrogantly declared that “it is with absolute conviction and unwavering confidence that I, as president of the GCB, and on behalf of its entire membership, hereby publicly and wholeheartedly endorse the leadership and presidency of President Ali and the PPPC”.
Upon being called out for such an open exhibition of political bias coming from a national organization that is mandated by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to be impartial with regards to political alignments, Mr. Singh doubled down to pitch that “President Ali is a leader of exceptional charisma, vision, and integrity. His commitment to building One Guyana (PPPC political slogan) – a nation where all people, regardless of background, ethnicity, or political persuasion, have the opportunity to thrive – is well known”.
Mr. Singh is supposed to be a man of intelligence, so, it would be unfathomable for him to think that anyone would not find his statement to be nothing but a full-throated advertisement for on behalf of the PPPC. By his very own words, Mr. Singh avows that the GCB is “apolitical”, so, it is mindboggling that he wants to claim that the GCB is “apolitical”, but at the same time openly and unambiguously endorse the PPPC which is a political party? How could Mr. Singh so insultingly take Guyanese to be such fools? Or, is it that Mr. Singh is incapable of grasping that “apolitical” simply means politically disinterested, nonpartisan, impartial, neutral, nonaligned, unbiased. How could endorsing a political party, especially in such a politically sensitive country as Guyana, not be anything but “apolitical”?
Mr. Singh unquestionably has the unmitigated right to endorse whosoever he wants and whichever political party he wants, but he has absolutely no right to commandeer the rights of all of the clubs and their membership claiming to speak on their behalf. This glaring political biasness is irresponsible and disdainful of the cricket community and fans in Guyana.
