The Alliance for Change (AFC) and the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) held a successful meeting yesterday. The meeting was held in a respectful and cordial atmosphere where both sides were able to freely express their views.
Central to the discussions was the upcoming General and Regional Elections. Both sides agreed that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) appears unprepared to deliver free, fair and credible elections. They noted that the Elections are due within months. Among the common concerns were, the need to ensure a credible list of electors and a transparent voting process. They agreed that the biometrics identification at the place of poll would greatly enhance the credibility of the Elections.
The AFC and the GTUC also discussed the need for a broad-based approach that would see political leaders working alongside religious and other civil society leaders to help steer national development. It was agreed that the AFC and the GTUC would continue and expand their engagements.
The Alliance For Change was represented by the Party’s Leader Nigel Hughes and included Chairman David Patterson M.P., Khemraj Ramjattan M.P., Cathy Hughes M.P., Beverley Alert M.P., Dianna Rajcumar and Laura George. The GTUC was represented by GTUC President Norris Whitter and General Secretary Lincoln Lewis. The meeting was held at the AFC’s Headquarters, Centre For Change.
