AFC repeats call for GECOM to recall its advice to the Speaker on Dr. Asha Kissoon
The AFC once again highlights the glaring violation of our constitution and laws of Guyana, as Dr. Asha Kissoon continues to squat and illegally occupy a parliamentary seat. We do not expect Dr. Kissoon to act correctly, uprightly, honourably, decently, or legally. She has demonstrated as much through her conduct.
However, GECOM, it’s Chairman and members, have a constitutional duty to act, by recalling the proclamation admittedly, erroneously issued, which stated that Dr. Kissoon is a duly elected member of the National Assembly, and thus entitled to be sworn in, and to serve in what is supposed to be the highest decision-making forum in the land. Whether the error was discovered one day, or one year late, it remains an error, which grows more egregious with each day that it is knowingly allowed to continue.
The AFC expects the Chairperson of GECOM, the Hon. Justice Claudette Singh, to uphold the constitution and laws of Guyana by leading the way to correct this vulgar violation.
We note that the National Assembly will meet tomorrow with several bills on the order paper for debate and passage. We do not expect to see Dr. Kissoon occupying her former seat in Parliament as her continued presence in the National Assembly could jeopardize the validity of any bills or motions passed.
We call on all right-thinking Guyanese to join their voices in protest against this and every other violation that we encounter daily. Enough is enough!
