The Alliance for Change extends best wishes to all Guyanese as we join in celebrating Republic Day 2010. A significant anniversary such as this one provides us with a chance to collectively renew our commitment to becoming a successful and progressive Republic, while the Mashramani celebrations allow us to explore and appreciate the cultural differences that too often are used to divide us.

The state of being a Republic does not automatically improve the lives of a nation’s citizens, and it is evident that after forty years Guyana has still not managed to become the Republic that we all know it can be. The AFC is confident that as a Government it can give meaning to our Republican status by finally vesting power in the people of Guyana so that we will no longer be forced to depend on the whims and discretions of unpopular party elites in order to improve our lives. This will represent a fundamental change in the way in which our Republic has been governed since its inception.  Our people deserve nothing less.

Mashramani is an evolving festival of our own creation and can only truly reflect our national culture if we all participate. The AFC supports Mashramani as a national celebration of the anniversary of Guyana’s attainment of its Republican status. The success of Mashramani requires the broadest possible participation and this should be encouraged and ensured by the prevailing leadership of our Republic.

As we enjoy the various activities taking place on ‘Mash day’ let us contemplate the next forty years in the future of the Republic of Guyana and how we the people can reclaim, re-mould and own our Republic.
