Alliance For Change (AFC) MP and Shadow Minister of Education, Social Security and Human Resource, Ms. Valarie Garida-Lowe, donated over 500 Text and other Reference books to the community based organisation (CBO), Timehri North Community Development Council (TNCDC) last Thursday at Timehri North, EBD. The books were handed over at a time when the residents through the CBO reached out to national organisations for assistance to help to improve the way of life for the residents in that community. Expressing concerns over the poor performance of pupils and students attending nursery, primary and secondary schools, the organization posited the view that with the establishment of a Reading and Research Centre within the area, much could be achieved, given the requisite equipment, tools and human resources.
Ms. Sherlanda Daniels, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the TNCDC, thanked the AFC for once again delivering on yet another promise (the books). She said that during a discussion, the CBO executives had with Mr. Nigel Hughes; who is also the legal representative of the organisation and by extension the community, on the plans of the TNCDC for the community, Mr. Hughes agreed to assist and promised the community some books to further their developmental thrust. She said that the promise was made a reality and that the community is gratified for the support and assistance given by the AFC. She noted that true to its word, the AFC pledge of support to the community was more humane rather than political, to which much praise must be given.
Meanwhile, another promise of two sewing machines, which was made to the women’s group “Northern Roses” of that community are expected to be presented shortly. Chairperson of the Northern Roses, Ms. Sheila Quinton, told the Shadow Minister that the women in her group are mobilized and have plans to establish a sewing pool of which bed linen, window curtains and school clothes among other fabrics would be made, thereby providing employment and income for the women therein. Ms. Quinton, speaking on behalf of the 17 women in her group said that earlier this year Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan- MP, through his party’s Region 4 representative, pledged two sewing machines to the group which inspired them to initiate the project. She said that the ladies are anxiously awaiting the sewing machines and expressed profound gratitude for Mr. Ramjattan’s insightfulness.
The MP pledged her personal support and that of her party for the further development of the community and the ladies group.
