Mr. Veersammy Ramayya. A graduate in Psychology and Political Science, Ramayya can be considered a ‘people’s person’. His life experiences, drawn from his early years of assisting his grandfather in the rice fields and helping his mother and grandmother to sell fish have taught Ramayya the value of hard work and dedication,  and the importance of all members to the development of a society.

Born June 27, 1947 at Whim Village, Corentyne, Berbice, Ramayya had his early schooling at the Auchlyne Primary School before moving on to the Rose Hall High School. As a young man just out of high school, he was fascinated by the proceedings in a magistrates’ court.

However, Ramayya was not to enter the legal profession. At the age of 22, his mother and grandmother decided that his future would be better served in the United States of America, so in 1969 Ramayya left Guyana for the USA.

In the USA, Ramayya attended the Manhattan Community College and 1977 graduated with an Associate Degree in Liberal Studies. In 1979 he was conferred with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and another in Sociology by City University (Hunter College). He continued his studies to successfully attain a Master of Art in Liberal Studies and PhD in Psychology with a Diploma in Ayurvedic medicine.

While in the US, Ramayya was the president of the New York Hindu Sanatan Mandir. He worked at various jobs:

  1. As Quality Clerk Inspector
  2. Shipping Clerk
  3. New York Hospital- Medical Records
  4. John Hancock Life Insurance Company Sales Agent (Licensed in N.Y., N.J.)
  5. Real Estate Agent (Licensed in N.Y.)
  6. Real Estate Investor

In 1991, Ramayya joined with overseas based groups working to restore democracy in Guyana. It was during this time that he met the late president Dr. Cheddi Jaggan who encouraged him to return home to help develop Guyana. In January 1993 he returned to Guyana and within a few months, became disillusioned with the PPP/C after witnessing first hand some of the divisive practices that party was engaged in. In 1994, he opposed the PPP/C at the Local Government Elections winning six seats on a Neighbourhood Democratic Council.

Today, in addition to serving as the Region Six Member of Parliament for the AFC, and practicing Ayurvedic medicine, Ramayya still finds time to be involved in many religious and social organizations and activities that benefit children. He also hosts a television programme.

He is married to Serojny Ophelia. Their union produced one child who unfortunately died in 1984 at the age of 14.
