Nigel Hughes’ Contribution and the Road Ahead for the AFC
(Sunday 21st September, 2025)
Nigel Hughes’ bid for the presidency under the Alliance for Change (AFC) banner was anchored in the belief that better must come. His leadership and vision for Guyana must not be overlooked or lightly dismissed.
Throughout his tenure with the AFC, Nigel has been more than a politician. He has been an advocate for justice, fairness, and constitutional reform. His track record in representing those who faced injustices in Guyana’s courts cemented his reputation as a lawyer who championed the voiceless, while his political service reflected his deep commitment to a more equitable society.
Within the AFC, Nigel served with distinction, offering clarity and purpose during some of the party’s most difficult moments. His leadership was not only strategic but also people centered. He carried forward the party’s founding principles of breaking from the entrenched two-party politics of Guyana and giving voice to citizens who longed for an alternative path.
To many, Nigel’s resignation after the 2025 elections came as a surprise both to the party’s membership and supporters, as well as to the wider Guyanese public. But in global politics, it is customary for leaders to step aside after a defeat, to “fall on their own sword,” not out of cowardice, but out of respect for the need to usher in new, youthful leadership while still offering guidance. This moment should not be misinterpreted as withdrawal, but as a responsible and principled step in keeping with democratic traditions.
The 2025 elections revealed unique and precarious dynamics in Guyanese politics. It exposed a hidden truth that voter perception, influenced by wealth, sensationalism, and pageantry, could be used to secure government. It also underscored how dependency on the state can be leveraged for political advantage. On the other side of this, Nigel Hughes brought reason and substance. His consistent advocacy for electoral and constitutional reform, his calls for equitable wealth distribution, and his plans for regional economic stimulation were not empty promises but carefully thought-out policies. His proposals for industry transformation and sound management of the oil and gas sector demonstrated foresight and seriousness that Guyana desperately needed and still needs.
Under his leadership, the AFC articulated one of the most comprehensive and forward-looking development policy frameworks in recent times. He listened to Guyanese from all walks of life, grounded his vision in their experiences, and outlined a road to prosperity that was both practical and transformative. These contributions cannot and should not be discounted. Guyana owes Nigel Hughes a debt of gratitude for his continued service, and his persistence should be encouraged.
As for the AFC, it is entering a period of metamorphosis. A rebirth that is often painful but necessary. The challenges are real, but they also present opportunities. As executives and members close ranks, consolidate their base, and rebuild, the AFC has the potential to emerge as a formidable force once again. With unity, resilience, and a return to its founding principles, the party can position itself to play a decisive role in Guyana’s political future.
Nigel Hughes’ journey with the AFC is far from over. His legacy of leadership, vision, and advocacy has already shaped the national discourse. What remains is for the AFC and the nation at large to build upon this foundation, ensuring that the sacrifices made and the vision shared lead to a stronger democracy and a more prosperous Guyana.
