PRESS RELEASE
Emancipation Day Message from the Alliance For Change
August 1, 2025

Today, the Alliance For Change (AFC) joins all Guyanese in honouring the strength and legacy of our African ancestors. Emancipation Day marks not only the end of slavery in 1838, but the beginning of an unrelenting journey toward dignity, justice, and equality.

Our ancestors endured centuries of brutality, and even after "freedom" came, the slave owners—not the enslaved—were compensated. Yet, from those bitter roots, Afro-Guyanese communities rose with resilience, building villages, leading in public life, and shaping the very character of our nation.

Many Afro-Guyanese still face systemic challenges—economic exclusion, cultural suppression, and unequal access to state resources. We must address:

  • The withholding of funds from IDPADA-G.
  • The displacement of families from ancestral lands.
  • The unresolved murders of the Henry boys and Adrianna Younge.
  • The neglect of African-founded communities and businesses.
  • The lingering cry for justice from places like Linden and Mocha.

These are not partisan issues—they are national imperatives.

As we approach the 2025 elections, Guyanese must choose between a government for a few or one that works for all. The AFC stands for a just and inclusive Guyana where all citizens have equal opportunity to thrive.

We will protect ancestral lands, support cultural and economic development, and pursue justice without fear or favour.

Let Emancipation Day be more than memory. Let it be a movement toward true freedom and national unity.
Happy Emancipation Day.
