Statement from the Alliance For Change and its Leader, Nigel Hughes
On the Passing of His Holiness Pope Francis
It is with deep sorrow and solemn respect that the Alliance For Change (AFC) joins the global community in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a towering spiritual leader, a champion of the poor, and a steadfast voice for compassion, justice, and peace.
Pope Francis was not only the head of the Roman Catholic Church — he was a moral compass in a turbulent world. With humility as his hallmark and courage as his constant companion, he brought the Church closer to the people, reminding us all of the transformative power of mercy, empathy, and service.
He stood boldly on issues that many feared to confront: climate change, inequality, war, and the plight of refugees. He challenged leaders to see the human dignity in every soul, regardless of status, faith, or origin. His teachings transcended the walls of the Vatican and found resonance in villages and cities across the world — including here in Guyana.
On behalf of the leadership, members, and supporters of the Alliance For Change, I extend heartfelt condolences to the Catholic community in Guyana and across the globe. We stand in solidarity with the faithful in this time of profound loss.
As we reflect on his life, let us honour Pope Francis by striving to be better stewards of justice, guardians of the vulnerable, and builders of peace. His example calls us not merely to mourn, but to act — to lift each other up and to build a world rooted in love.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire us all.
