PRESS RELEASE<\/strong><\/p>\n FEMALE OPPOSITION MP\u2019S IN GUYANA FACE THE WORSE GENDER BASED VERBAL ABUSE IN THEIR PARLIAMENT.<\/strong><\/p>\n The Alliance For Change, AFC, wishes to highlight the ongoing gender based verbal abuse metted out to it\u2019s female MP\u2019s on a regular basis and most recently the totally vile and disrespectful comments hurled at MP Juretha Fernandes – an indegenious Member of Parliament who holds the portfolio of Shadow Minister of Finance in the APNU+AFC parliamentary coalition.<\/p>\n On Tuesday January 24, 2024 during the budget debates that are currently taking place, Government Ministers Anand Persaud and Kwame Mc Coy hurled shouts of \u201cstripper\u201d \u201cbartica kaimoo\u201d and others comments too indecent to mention here, at the Honourable MP Fernandes.<\/p>\n The deepest cut of all is that the Speaker of the House, Mansoor Nadir, who is himself a husband and father of daughters, is yet to demand a public apology from the two government ministers in question. Today\u2019s session of parliament began and is close to ending with no public apology being issued. This the AFC finds totally unacceptable.<\/p>\n It is unfortunate that female MP\u2019s on the opposition side are forced to endure gender based verbal abuse on a regular basis just to serve their country as a parliamentarian.<\/p>\n We note that senior parliamentarian the Hon. Gail Texeria and her band of female MP\u2019s on the Government side have remained silent in seeming acceptance of the hurling of this abuse.<\/p>\n The AFC reminds all Guyanese women of the sordid history some male PPP ministers and MP\u2019s hold with regards to their treatment of women that range from assault metted out within the walls of parliament, the infamous dildo comment on the floor of the parliament and outside of parliament public allegations rapes, and reports of threats of slaps and other verbal abuse to ordinary citizens.
