General Secretary to the People\u2019s Progressive Party Civic, Donald Ramotar, has described the Alliance For Change\u2019s (AFC) negative position on investors coming into Guyana as \u201cabsolute nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a previous article published in this newspaper, Chief Executive Officer of the AFC and economist, Peter Ramsaroop, had said that the current crime and general absence of rule of law are warding off any massive investments in agro proceedings.<\/p>\n

Ramotar is of the opinion that even though there should be more investors entering Guyana, the absence of large scale investors \u201chas to do with infrastructure.\u201d He made particular note of energy, adding that it is for this reason that the PPP\/C is pushing for hydro electricity.<\/p>\n

He said that there is a need for more competitive energy, as compared to Guyana\u2019s continental neighbours. He emphasised that the scarcity of large scale investors in the country has nothing to do with the crime within the nation and as such the AFC\u2019s claim is \u201cdegenerating them back to where they came from, the PNC.\u201d<\/p>\n

Continuing, he said that the state of a country as it relates to crime should not influence investors, referring to places like the Congo that is under constant conflict, and continuously manages to attract investors to their country despite the many current difficulties.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Ramotar is of the opinion that Guyana has come a far way infrastructure wise, and mentioned some areas that the government is currently trying to make improvements on, to make Guyana a more attractive nation for investors.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, after drawing reference to Guyana\u2019s bad score on the Corruption Perception Index in the Transparency International 2009 report, the AFC CEO had said, \u201cWhen you are a foreign direct investor these are the critical criteria you use in measuring whether or not you bring large money into any investment opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ramotar commented on this quote, saying \u201cI don\u2019t know if it is true.\u201d The General Secretary disclosed that he has made efforts to locate the sources of Transparency International\u2019s information on Guyana, but has to date not been able to uncover any source.<\/p>\n

From this Ramotar deduces that whoever the international body obtained its information from is against the Government of Guyana, and described Transparency International as \u201cvery subjective.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
